As the lead engineer for this design-build project, Wilbur Smith Associates designed the widening of NC 146 (Long Shoals Road) from west of Clayton Road (S.R. 3501) to east of I-26 in Buncombe County, NC. In addition to widening NC 146, the project included a single-point urban interchange (SPUI) at I-26 (a first in western North Carolina) to improve safety and efficiency, and a new 400-foot bridge over the French Broad River. Major WSA work tasks included project management; roadway, structural, geotechnical, and signal design; right-of-way acquisitions; and construction phase assistance to Wright Brothers Construction.
