Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation

The Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation provides interim storage for spent nuclear fuel. This project involved the design and construction of a facility to provide sufficient storage for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant to continue operation through the end of the plant’s life. The project included relocation of existing facilities, ground modification, and construction of base slabs, aprons and a haul road. It also included installation of perimeter site security measures and fuel storage modules, as wells as initial loading of modules witnessed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Consultants and contractors involved included: Progress Energy, Enercon Services, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Prototype Engineering, AMEC E&I, Hayward Baker, Hardy Construction, and ACE/Avant Concrete Construction Company.
