The Ahoskie Wastewater Treatment Plant Project demonstrates the ability to mitigate an existing spray irrigation treatment facility in violation of State regulations through the integration of a new state-of-the-art biological nutrient removal (BNR) treatment facility. This facility constitutes the first surface water discharge allowed in the nutrient-sensitive Chowan River basin in more than 20 years. The project supports environmental sustainability by producing high-quality effluent suitable for beneficial reuse such as agricultural irrigation, cooling water needs for industrial facilities, fire fighting, construction uses and non-potable water uses. Project financing included local, State, and Federal funds.
